How to choose your running shorts?
When you want to equip yourself for running, you mainly think about finding the right shoes. Wearing suitable and comfortable clothing is just as important and choosing running shorts that suit you is no exception. In this guide, you will find all our advice for finding comfortable men’s or women’s running shorts that will be forgotten during training or racing.
What material should you choose for your running shorts?
Whether in trail running or inroad running, you will need shorts that are lightweight, comfortable and quick-drying. Synthetic materials such as polyester and polyamide are recommended for trail shorts to ensure comfort, heat and sweat evacuation.
Cotton should be avoided for intense sportswear in general because it absorbs and retains moisture from perspiration. Cotton clothing also takes a long time to dry, causing an unpleasant feeling of dampness and cold after exercise. A proportion of elastane of at least 20% is recommended for better freedom of movement.
What type of inner lining should you choose for your running shorts?
There are two main families of running shorts:
- Shorts with built-in underwear are the most common. Support is provided by briefs, boxers or cycling shorts depending on the model. These shorts offer a high level of comfort with excellent friction management, especially between the thighs. Runners looking for support at the thighs will particularly appreciate built-in cycling shorts. The Twinskin™ construction, exclusive to Salomon, combines stretchy, affordable polyester shorts and a looser overshort without overlapping at the crotch, for greater comfort and reduced friction.
Depending on the level of support you are looking for at the thighs, you can choose integrated muscle support shorts or compression shorts, which tighten more tightly, promoting venous return.
Women can also opt for a skort which is a skirt with built-in shorts. Ideal for a light summer outfit even after many kilometers!
- Shorts without built-in underwear allow you to choose your own underwear or running shorts to wear underneath. You can therefore combine this type of shorts with different lengths of underwear depending on your preferences and needs (lightness, protection, support).
How to choose the right size of running shorts?
The key to choosing the right running shorts is comfort. If you are unsure about the length, type of construction and size of your shorts, simply choose the one in which you feel best when running.
Some people like to have a lot of support and choose a fitted shorts cut. To choose your compression shorts size, refer to the manufacturer’s size guide.
If you prefer to forget about your shorts, you will certainly like short models with the most comfortable built-in underwear possible, such as briefs or boxers, even if it means having little or no muscle support. However, choose a size that is tight enough for your shorts to stay in place during your workout, especially if you use the pockets built into the waistband.
How many pockets do I need on my shorts?
We do not recommend using hand pockets on trail shorts because without support, the objects inside will tend to move uncomfortably during the race. Therefore, choose shorts belts with integrated pockets that allow you to carry a small flask of water or an energy gel for example. A pocket is sometimes provided for the phone in the back but be careful of humidity due to perspiration.
Some inner short linings also have small pockets (usually in the front and back).
If you want to carry more equipment or clothing for more autonomy, use a belt, a backpack or a running vest. You will find all our advice for making the right choice in our article “mens gym shorts with pockets?”
Take into account climate, seasons and light
When choosing trail shorts for weather and light conditions, consider options with breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics for warmer climates, while more insulating fabrics are best for colder weather. For warmer weather, opt for mesh shorts for increased ventilation. For visibility, choose shorts with reflective elements or bright colors for nighttime or low-light running.Gravity force Shorts with headlamp pockets are also helpful for nighttime runs.
